Phonics Teaching

At St Francis C.E. Primary School we follow the Letters and Sounds PDF icon phonics programme.

Letters and Sounds works through 6 phases and children will primarily focus on these in the Foundation Stage and Key Stage One. However, as all children progress at different rates, phonics does continue in to Key Stage Two where appropriate. Pupil progress is monitored closely and the groupings for each phase are flexible so that all learning needs are catered for appropriately.

Phonics is taught daily by the class teacher and teaching assistants with top-up sessions provided for those children requiring additional support. All staff delivering phonics sessions are fully trained and receive regular refreshers to ensure consistency and quality of provision.

We also use Espresso within the school. This virtual learning platform contains a wealth of videos and activities to support the delivery of the phonics curriculum.

supporting your child

To support your child at home, reading with and to them regularly is vital. In addition, there are a wealth of games and resources online which can be used to support their learning. The links below include a fantastic range of games that can be used to support phonic knowledge and more.
